Roy Chapman Andrews Legacy Expedition 2027

2027: The Final Chapter of the Roy Chapman Andrews Legacy Expedition

Two years ago, a team set out to retrace the footsteps of legendary explorer Roy Chapman Andrews through the Gobi Desert. In 2026, the expedition continued its work in south-eastern Mongolia. Now, in 2027, the Roy Chapman Andrews Legacy Expedition will head west — into the remote landscapes of Uliastai and Khovd, the historic "Uliassutai and Khobdo trail" that Andrews' own Central Asiatic Expedition once planned to explored but couldn't due to political sitation at the time.

A Bigger, Combined Mission
Running June 20 – July 5, 2027 for 16 days and covering roughly 4,000 km of driving, the 2027 expedition will bring together international explorers and local researchers, supported by a full logistics and service team.

What we are looking for
Biology will survey mammal diversity across the Great Lake Valley in western Mongolia, tracking species such as argali sheep, goitered gazelle, Siberian ibex, and the critically endangered Mongolian saiga antelope (Saiga tatarica mongolica).
Anthropology will document the living heritage of Manhan and Darvi Soums — from prehistoric rock art and ancient burial sites to the traditions of the Zakhchin and Uriankhai ethnic groups, and Mongolia's legendary Kazakh eagle hunting tradition.

Bringing It Full Circle
Leading the expedition once more are Robert Atwater, Saruul Batbayar, and Sisi Undrakh — the same three who have guided the Roy Chapman Andrews Legacy Expedition from its very first day in 2025.

As the expedition's own closing words put it:
"Legacy is what we inspire others to carry forward."
The 2027 expedition promises to close out the three-year Roy Chapman Andrews Legacy Expedition in the same spirit it began — retracing history while writing a new chapter of its own.
